Northern Lights Indica Strain
Some varieties are simply well-known. However, Northern Lights (Afghanica) have achieved cult status.
If you’re a regular cannabis user, chances are you’ve tried Northern Lights before, or one of its siblings like Sour Diesel or Shiva Skunk, to name a few. The exact origin and history of Northern Lights is shrouded in mystery and may be forgotten forever.

The prevailing opinion is that it originated in the Pacific Northwest and has few fans. Then it traveled to Holland where two of the best genotypes crossed (Northern Lights #5 x Northern Lights #2). The NL #5 had the largest share in the cross because NL #5 increases the potency of the strain and also speeds up the flowering time. The NL #2 gives the strain a fantastic scent and taste and also contributes to the overall strength and power of the high. In addition, NL #2 is a longer-lived plant that has greater resistance to pests and mold than other phenotypes.
Appearance and smell of the Northern Lights
The strain was stunning to look at, both up close and from a distance. The eighth sample I was given to test consisted of a huge bud that was carefully cut. It showed all of the „inner workings“ of the buds and left plenty of leaf material that looked natural. The overall shade was light with fresh greens and gold-like pistils. Northern Lights strain.
Northern Lights boasts large, dense buds covered in a silvery-white frosting of trichromes. Buds are usually separated by just a small piece of stem, making trimming a breeze and producing high yields.

The buds are not huge, but they are heavy (typical indica-like structure), but not enough to make them impervious to bud rot. This is a huge problem. This is a significant problem with many indica strains – making Northern Lights a good indica for growing in humid conditions.
The scent is freshly herbal, slightly skunky from a distance, and turns into a rich, sweet citrus-pine smell with a hint of eucalyptus when the petals are crushed. The aroma is sharper and more intense, taking on a smoky citrus flavor reminiscent of burnt orange peel, mixed with a hint of pine.
The smoke
A little sweet and citrusy on the inhale, but more musky and piney on the exhale. This Northern Lights strain definitely tasted like the smell, but was less sour overall.
The flavor and smoke have an enveloping quality that is best described as „buttery,“ but the expansion elements also caused coughing fits on larger hits.
Vaporizing the buds might help reduce this. The smooth, consistent flavor remained after each hit and the bowl finished a mild gray. It was almost white ash, suggesting the grower did a perfect flush.

Some people say it’s a „creeper“ strain, but for me the effects were immediate feelings of euphoria and intense, almost intense cerebral effects, and that was just the very first dose.
After a few more hits, an extremely relaxing and pleasant feeling of peace and joy sets in, along with the intense indica high. Northern Lights is an indica strain.
